Just wow. No words or pictures can fully explain the sheer beauty of this spot. It is simply stunning! The scenery in every direction and the rich Australian history you’re walking amongst, is pretty spectacular.
If you drive all the way to the end of Point Nepean National Park you’ll come to a car park. You have two choices on how to get to Fort Nepean; you can hike - which is approximately 3.8km each way, or you can hop onboard the shuttle bus.
Mamma’s crew chose to walk, and wow - what a phenomenal view it is. With two sets of littler legs, we walked at a slow pace, stopping lots to admire the cliff edges and crashing waves on one side, and the calm turquoise water on the other side.
You can also stop at the Harold Holt memorial site (the former Prime Minister went missing from swimming here at Cheviot beach) and the kids will get a nervous thrill from seeing the unexploded bomb sites.
As you walk along the undulating path, the views just keep getting better. You will be amazed at how close you are to the west, with Point Lonsdale lighthouse in close view.
Once you arrive at the Fort you can walk underground through the dark tunnels and into bomb proof rooms, and see the Gun Emplacements where the first Australian gun shot of World War II was fired.
It’s an incredible spot that the whole family will enjoy. Pack a picnic and bring your water bottles as there are no facilities at this end of the National Park area.

Free parking - walk from carpark to Fort Neapean is 3.8km each way - is pram friendly (but uphill some way) a shuttle bus is available with tickets purchased
